MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ― Federal agents shot and killed a Minneapolis man on Saturday morning, leading to violent clashes between demonstrators and federal law enforcement. Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, was identified as the victim by his family. “He cared about people deeply and he was very upset with what was happening in Minneapolis and throughout the United States with ICE, as millions of other people are upset,” said Michael Pretti, Alex’s father, in a statement. “He thought it was terrible, you know, kidnapping children, just grabbing people off the street. He cared about those people, and he knew it was wrong, so he did participate in protests.” Advertisement. The confrontation began when, according to eyewitness video, two women were standing off with a federal agent and Pretti was filming the interaction with a cell phone. At least one agent attacks the women and then Pretti. Another video shows an agent spraying a chemical irritant in his face and in the faces of the women before throwing Pretti on the ground. At this point, at least six masked agents were wrestling with him before firing at least 10 shots, fatally wounding Pretti. Alex Pretti, pictured center, was an ICU nurse who worked as a researcher at the Department of Veteran Affairs. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Department of Homeland Security alleged in a statement that Pretti approached Border Patrol officers with a handgun, which is not supported by publicly available video evidence. The graphic video of the shooting threw the city and state into a new cycle of rage, just weeks after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, inside her vehicle. Immediately after the shooting on Saturday, protesters swarmed a nearby intersection as a swelling crowd chanted “shame!” and “fuck ICE!” Federal agents stand guard in Minneapolis after agents were seen shooting a man on Saturday. Federal agents then fired tear gas into the crowd, filling the air with clouds of smoke. “Somebody threw a snowball at the ICE agent,” one protester named Jacob said. “Then they started trying to identify the person in the crowd, and then they came out from behind the police tape. The people started scattering, and then they started firing tear gas.” Protesters rolled dumpsters into the street and banged on vehicles. Officials Call For ICE To Leave. Mayor Jacob Frey said Saturday that this is “not what America is about.” “The mass militarized force, unidentified agents, that is what weakens our country,” he said. “That is what erodes trust and democracy itself. To everyone listening: Stand for Minnesota. Stand up for America. Recognize that your children will ask you what side you are on. Your grandchildren will ask you what you did to prevent this from happening again. What did you do to protect your city? What did you do to protect your nation? This is not what America is about.” Frey called on President Donald Trump to remove federal forces immediately from Minnesota. “To President Trump: This is a moment to act like a leader,” the mayor said. “Put Minneapolis, put America first in this moment. Let’s achieve peace. Let’s end this operation. And I’m telling you our city will come back, safety will be restored. Take action now to remove these federal agents.” Advertisement. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) made similar demands in a social media post. “I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning,” he wrote. “Minnesota has had it. This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.” Trump Administration Calls Agents The Real Victims. Gregory Bovino, commander-at-large for U.S. Border Patrol, held his own short press conference Saturday afternoon in which he painted law enforcement as the victims of violence. “This is only the latest attack on law enforcement,” Bovino said. “Across the country, the men and women of DHS have been attacked, shot at, doxxed, had their family members threatened, and as we have seen more than 100 vehicle rammings over the past year against federal law enforcement.” Advertisement.
